Hello Families,
I did some digging and came across some websites that might help your child with their journal writing. The more they read about explores, their expeditions, and 16th and 17th century lifestyles, the more they will be able to write about the topic. I'm not sure how good these websites are, as I took a quick look at each. If you find another website that was helpful, please post it in the comments. That way we can build up our research resources! This is a reminder to do your weekly IXL homework! Remember you have until Sunday to complete the minimum requirement! One area that would be beneficial to work on is multiplication facts! IXL is a great place to do that. I also recommend that you make flash cards for facts 1-12 (at least) and practice those daily! The more you practice the faster you will be able to recal those facts! I've had this conversation with a few parents and thought it would be helpful to fill the rest of you in as well. The students have been introduced to a different style of book and writing focus questions with our current book, Morning Girl, in preparation for what they will be doing next year in their literature class. Many of the questions are asking the students to infer and come up with what they think, based on examples from the text, rather than straight forward fact based questions. We are also diving deeper into character analysis and development. With this novel there are two points of view-one coming from Morning Girl and the other from her brother, Star Boy. You may have noticed that your child is coming home with more incompletes than usual.I was expecting that. Not that I want their scores to go down, but the level of questioning is much different than what we have been doing. We've been having meaningful and deep conversations during our conferences on these questions and I feel that the students are starting to see how to approach this style of novel and comprehension questions. So, yes the scores are low for the class, but the students make up for it by participating in the conferences and completing their incompletes. I hope that this gives you insight into what your child has been bringing home! Please don't hesitate to send me your questions or concerns. Enjoy your day, Mrs. Marron |
