Hello and happy new year to you!
The January Lit Calendar has been posted under the Literacy tab. Your child will get a paper copy to keep in their literature binders as well. This month we are switching gears as we finish up the Post Test (due on January 8th) for Spy in the Sky and move on to the Civil War Speech Project.
At the beginning of the school year, each student selected a Civil War identity that they would represent in their State Militia (homeroom team) and conducted research on that person. Then with the information they gathered, they created an Identity Slideshow in Google Slides during their Technology time. The students have collected most of the research they need (they may need to brush up a little) to move on to writing their identity speech. The identity speeches will be shared in class on February 2nd, but the ultimate goal is to have their speech memorized and ready to share at the Invention Fair on Sunday, February 7th (the day of the performance).
This week the students will receive the Civil War Speech Project outline, listing the topics that need to be included in their speech. Their Identity Slideshow will be a big help with this project, as they have already done most of the research they need to complete their speech, no need to start from scratch!
Here are the topics students are responsible for researching and writing about:
Homework for the next month is to work on writing a speech rough draft covering the above topics. Some will be longer than others. We do understand that there may be limited information on some of the selected identities. I've told the students to work with what they have for the slideshow project, this will be no different. While in class, the students will edit their rough drafts and then start publish their final speech.
My goal for the students, is to have their speeches published by January 26th, so they can practice memorizing and delivering their speech for the in class presentation on February 2nd and for the Invention Fair on February 7th.
Thank you for helping your child find resources and information on their identities and for helping them stay on track with their homework assignments. Please let me know if you have any questions about this project.
Best,
Mrs. Marron
